Amount in words

Type an amount in euros and see it written out in Dutch and in English. Cents optional, up to € 999,999,999,999.99. Your amount stays in your browser.

The field holds an example. Replace it with your own amount.

For example 1,234.56 or 80. Use a point before the cents; commas may separate the thousands.

How the Dutch is written

The Dutch follows the spelling advice of Taaladvies.net (Taalunie and Onze Taal):

  • Numbers up to and including “duizend” (thousand) are one word: eenentwintig, honderdvijfendertig, tweehonderdvijfendertig.
  • After “duizend” comes a space: tweeduizend zes, achtentwintigduizend vierenzestig.
  • When the first part ends in an e (twee, drie), “en” gets a diaeresis: tweeëntwintig, drieëndertig. Otherwise not: eenentwintig, vierentwintig.
  • “Miljoen” and “miljard” are separate words: drie miljoen, vijf miljard tweehonderd miljoen.
  • After honderd and duizend an “en” is allowed (honderdentwee, duizend en zes) but not needed. We leave it out: honderdtwee, duizend zes.
  • Euro and cent stay the same in the plural: twee euro, vijf cent.

And the English

  • We use the British cheque style: “one thousand two hundred and thirty-four euros and fifty-six cents”.
  • A hyphen between tens and units (thirty-four), and “and” after “hundred” and just before the last one or two digits (one thousand and one).
  • No commas between the groups, and the short scale: a billion is 1,000,000,000 (in Dutch a miljard).

Frequently asked questions

Why “honderdeen” and not “honderd en een”?

The language advice accepts both: the “en” after honderd and duizend is allowed but not needed. We picked one form so the result is always the same.

Why are there no cents when they are zero?

An amount of € 80.00 becomes “eighty euros”. When there are cents they follow: “eighty euros and fifty cents”.

How is “1,234” read in this field?

As 1234, because the comma separates the thousands here. For 1 euro and 23 cents, type 1.23. Amounts with more than two digits after the point are refused, so we never have to guess.

Is my amount stored?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and your amount never goes to a server. We only count anonymously how the page is used (no cookies, no IP address).
