How to work out VAT by hand

From excluding to including VAT: multiply the amount by 1 plus the rate. At 21% that is × 1.21, at 9% × 1.09 and at 0% × 1.00. The VAT itself is the amount × the rate: €100.00 × 21% = €21.00, so €121.00 including VAT.

From including to excluding VAT: divide the amount by the same factor. €121.00 ÷ 1.21 = €100.00. The VAT is the difference between the two amounts. Do not take 21% off the amount including VAT: that gives too low an amount, because 21% of the larger amount is more than the VAT.

Rounding: round to whole cents. This calculator rounds half a cent and up upwards. Going from including to excluding VAT, the amount excluding VAT is rounded first and the VAT follows from it, so the three amounts always add up exactly. If you work with several lines, the sum of the rounded lines can differ by a cent from the VAT on the total.
